Truth is Concrete: A Handbook for Artistic Strategies in Real Politics
Beautiful new book and a lovely cup of coffee. Aaand breathe. - Instagram post, March '15
Allow me to introduce you to my Bible. The book I've revisited the most times, recommend the most often and hold tightly when I'm losing my thread (or my guts.)
'Truth is Concrete' was a marathon event over three days in 2012. The programme consisted of 300 lectures, panels, talks, performances, concerts, films, workshops and continued 24 hours a day, creating a consistent thinking and networking space. The non-stop activity also meant that every attendee had to be strategic in how they spent their time and energy. It was a fizzy debate, live playground lawless space for re-writing the future.
This handbook contains 99 entries from artists, activists, projects and practitioners engaged in the area where art and activism meet. It's scrappy yet thorough, mischievous yet entirely serious, realistic yet hopeful. I've quoted essays from this book in an academic context, and referenced some of the stories featured as part of casual chat at the pub. It's a compendium; a celebration; an experiment; a provocation. And it's bright orange. It's fabulous.
