UnMaking or How to Rethink Urban Narratives
'What better use of a bank holiday than rethinking urban narratives?!
In all seriousness, this book is getting me very excited. Of course I picked it up in the Netherlands; land of experts in interrupting the ways cities work.
I've been thinking a lot about cultural and structural reasons why some things shift and others don't. The case studies in this book are AMAZING, but wouldn't work in England however hard we try. I'm interested in why that is and what strategies would make best use of the cracks and gaps in British culture and systems.' - Instagram post, April '17
The city is so much more than what we see: It's how we experience it, who we meet and the actions it inspires. 'UnMaking' highlights projects and artworks that encourage us imagine beyond what is and experiment with what might be. The examples encourage us to be playful in taking ownership of our streets and building an evidence base for doing things differently.
I picked up this book when I visited Casco; an arts organisation based in Utrecht in The Netherlands. Their library and book shop is just insane and well worth a visit if you're anywhere within 100 miles. However, if it's just this book you want, it's available online all over the place. I paid the little bit extra for the acrylic record too. It's a pretty beautiful thing.
