"I've just discovered @wearemadlug. They mostly make bags and, for every one that you buy, they'll give another to a child in care. With that in mind, I'll be stuffing a few stockings with their lovely notebooks. Every little helps!" - Instagram post, Dec '16
There are over 90,000 children in care in the UK and Ireland. Another child enters the UK care system every 20 minutes. It's often an unsettled lifestyle; regularly moving between various homes and often with only bin bags to shift their stuff.
Founder of Madlug, David Linton, had no experience of the luggage industry, but knew it was a practical way of approaching the problem: A bag for a bag. In 2015, he set up the business with only £480 and a whole lot of motivation. And it was always meant to be a business, not a charity case. The money generated from the sale of high quality luggage to the public would go directly into the purchase of bespoke bags for young people in care: A badge of honour that says they're valued.
The opportunities to give quality gifts that support an individual or an entire community are growing all the time, if you know where to look. Madlug offers backpacks, gym bags, laptop cases and cabin suitcases that are well designed and available in a range of brilliant colours.
Treat yourself, treat someone else, and know you're passing it forward.
