Talk: Mona Chalabi - 3 Ways to Spot a Bad Statistic

Mona Chalabi is a 'Data Journalist'.

I'd never heard the term before I came across her brilliant TED Talk, but it sounds like we all need one in our lives. My understanding so far, is that Mona takes the whole picture into consideration when she's reporting on a topic, conversation or trend. Yes, stats and academic research come into it, but so do stories, experiences, cultures and misunderstandings.

If knowledge is power, then assuming that data worth knowing comes from dedicated sources, like universities, science labs and government initiatives, puts all the power in one place. What I love about the idea of data journalism is that we all feed into it, all types of information are valuable and we are all responsible for holding our sources accountable.

Mona's talk encourages us to take ownership of data; it's about us but it's also for us, so we should be demanding the fullest picture possible! She's also well worth following on Instagram for her incredible data drawings.
